| Oneida Magic Moment 704 |
|

|
This dear old mare was laid to rest on 7 January
2005 at age 25.
Magic was the quintessential Appaloosa with a big heart, a caring
nature and a totally trustworthy temperament, making her a favourite
youth and family horse.
Back in 1982, Magic had to fight for the right to be considered
an Appaloosa. Her dam Sunrise Plaudette (Money Creek Plaudit x Delgany
Iced Vovo), who was imported from Australia in utero, didn't grow
tall enough to qualify as a horse, so was deregistered as an Appaloosa.
Magic (Plaudette's foal by Colidas Jet Set) would only be allowed
into the Appaloosa adult registry if she achieved her ROM in open
performance.
Attaining the points needed for a ROM in those days in such a short
period of time was a daunting task but the 3 year old Magic Moment
passed that test with flying colours by February of her first show
season, after just 5 months under saddle with Glenn Campin
She was the only Appaloosa to qualify for the Clevedon Pleasure
Futurity that year and combined pleasure with games without missing
a beat. She really came alive when faced with the tough tests, excelling
in reining, working cowhorse, games and endurance.
Albert Tucker, founder of the Oneida Stud, remembers 'She certainly
had real heart and we had some marvellous rides together. When getting
ready for those endurance rides, she would be up and down the fence,
nickering for me when I was late or slow coming for her each day.
I would open the gate and she would trot off around to and into
the barn and be waiting there for me to saddle up and away.'
We purchased Magic from the Tuckers in early 1989, weaning her
foal Oneida Finale from her by loading Magic into the horse truck
and bringing her home for Heidi to ride. Magic was brought back
into work after several years of broodmaredom by having Heidi
(then 12 years old) jump on her to see if she remembered how to
do that flag race.
For the next few years she was a youth horse, taking Heidi to
NZ Youth Champion #4. Never previously shown at halter, she proved
just as consistent a performer in that arena before being retired
to the broodmare paddock to produce several times Super Horse
qualifier Jagady's Magic Charmer (dec 2005).
|
Lacking any other horse to ride, Petra brought her
back into work in 1995-96. That season, the 16 year old Magic achieved
her first supreme champion at halter, took champion mare at Te Awamutu
A&P over 19 mares half her age and completed her ROS at halter.
You could say she held her shape well!
She gave us one more foal and enjoyed
a well-deserved retirement, teaching the various young horses
(including her 2004 grand-daughter) how
to behave and never minded the occasional child being boosted
on to her back, despite the total blindness that set in over the
past year. When she stopped enjoying her life, she was laid to
rest at home in her favourite spot, close to all her companions.
